According to Sleep Education's National Indicator Report, nearly 30 million adults in the United States live with obstructive sleep apnea, yet a significant proportion of them discontinue standard CPAP therapy due to discomfort with masks, claustrophobia, nasal congestion, skin irritation, and feeling restricted. Southern California Pulmonary & Sleep Disorders Medical Center has announced its eXciteOSA therapy to address this gap, giving patients a treatment option that requires no nightly equipment and can be used during waking hours instead.
The therapy works through a removable silicone mouthpiece fitted with four electrodes positioned around the tongue. A rechargeable control unit connects to the mouthpiece via USB and is operated through a companion app, which guides each session and tracks changes in snoring over time.
A medical center spokesperson explains that the device delivers mild electrical muscle stimulation intended to strengthen tongue muscles and prevent the tongue from collapsing into the airway during sleep. Treatment consists of a 20-minute session once daily for six weeks, followed by weekly maintenance sessions.
eXciteOSA is offered at Southern California Pulmonary & Sleep Disorders Medical Center under the direction of Dr. Ronald Popper, who is board-certified in Sleep Disorders Medicine by both the American Board of Sleep Medicine and the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Southern California Pulmonary & Sleep Disorders Medical Center has held accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine since 1985 and serves patients throughout Camarillo, Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village, Malibu, Los Angeles, and the broader Ventura County region. The medical center representative highlights that the practice also provides evaluation for CPAP alternatives, including oral appliance therapy and Inspire upper airway stimulation, allowing patients to be matched with a treatment suited to the severity of their condition.
Patients interested in learning whether eXciteOSA is appropriate for their symptoms are encouraged to schedule a consultation at https://sleepmd4u.com/ or by contacting the center directly at (805) 557-9930.
