Ontario’s Traffic Enforcement at a Crossroads: Street Legal on Camera Ban Proposal and Digital Courts

With Ontario moving to ban municipal speed cameras while launching a new online court portal, drivers face a confusing transition period. Street Legal, an Ontario paralegal firm, offers insight into how these changes could affect ticket enforcement, fines, and driver accountability.

-- Ontario’s traffic enforcement system is undergoing another dramatic shift. The provincial government has announced plans to ban municipal automated speed cameras, even as a new online court portal rolls out across the province to handle ticket filings, payments, and virtual hearings.

Street Legal, an Ontario paralegal firm specializing in traffic ticket defence, says the overlap of these two changes is leaving many drivers unsure what rules still apply.

“Drivers have spent years adjusting to camera enforcement, and now they’re being told it could be dismantled,” says a Street Legal representative. “At the same time, courts are going digital. It’s a lot of change hitting at once, and people don’t know how to navigate it.”

Cameras may fade, but fines remain

Under the proposed legislation, municipalities would no longer be permitted to operate automated speed cameras. Street Legal notes that while this could reduce mailed tickets, it won’t erase fines already issued or unpaid.

“Anyone who has outstanding camera tickets still needs to pay them before renewing their licence plate,” the firm explains. “A potential ban doesn’t erase what’s already on file.”

The firm also warns that municipalities could pursue other enforcement methods to replace lost revenue, such as stepped-up officer patrols or mobile photo radar units operated under provincial authority.

Courts enter the digital era

Meanwhile, Ontario’s new court portal represents the largest modernization in decades. Drivers can now file documents, pay fees, and attend hearings online — a change Street Legal supports but says will require education.

“Moving everything online can make things faster, but it also creates new risks for people who miss a notice or upload the wrong file,” says the firm. “Deadlines don’t stop just because you didn’t see an email.”

The paralegal team encourages drivers to log in early, confirm contact information, and keep digital copies of all submissions.

Navigating a shifting system

Street Legal says the current period of uncertainty is when drivers most often make costly mistakes. “People assume that if cameras are going away, enforcement is relaxing — it isn’t,” the firm warns. “Tickets will still exist, the courts are changing format, and the paperwork matters more than ever.”

The firm believes the key is clarity: understanding what’s changing and what isn’t. “Our job is to help drivers interpret these updates and protect their records,” the representative says. “Technology and legislation may change, but due process doesn’t.”
