On Hengli Island, Nansha District, Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China, a building shaped like a kapok flower has risen, establishing itself as the permanent site of the International Financial Forum (IFF) on China's first international financial island.
Recently, China News Network invited foreign host Cuihua to ascend to the top of the “kapok flower”, offering a unique tour of the IFF Convention Center.
The IFF Convention Center invested and constructed by China Energy Engineering Group Co., Ltd.(ENERGY CHINA), covers a construction area of 257,200 square meters. The project, with surmounting challenges including complex geological conditions, high groundwater levels, typhoon seasons and the pandemic, was completed and put into operation in three years.
From an architectural perspective, the IFF Convention Center – the “kapok flower” - showcases smooth and cohesive design lines, achieved through the innovative use of China's first 3.9-meter-wide suspended hollow PTFE (Poly tetra fluoroethylene) membrane curtain wall. The curtain wall boasts tensile strength comparable to steel, but with only 65% of its weight and a high light transmittance rate of 60%. The project utilized a total of 16,500 tons of steel, exceeding that used in two Eiffel Towers, and comprised nearly 30,000 components and over 67,000 main welds, ultimately forming a 54,000-square-meter structure that resembles a kapok flower.
In addition, within the IFF Convention Center, elements featuring Lingnan architecture, such as the boat hall, eaves, arcade, and corrugated walls, are seamlessly integrated with modern architectural design. The use of renewable and recyclable materials accentuates the green ethos of “Made in China”.
As the centerpiece of the permanent site of the IFF project, the grand International Conference Center has 45 variously sized conference and exhibition halls, including the main venue, banquet halls, council meeting halls, and multi-function halls. The main venue and banquet hall together can accommodate up to 2,000 people simultaneously.
On October 27, the IFF Convention Center hosted its first major event. The blossoming kapok flower symbolizes the far-reaching influence of the IFF. Focusing on Belt and Road Initiative and the Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, it aims to become a new highland for the world's new finance and Silk Road cooperation and dialogue, with the vision of being “the heart of the China’s Greater Bay Area, the window to the world”.
