Ten Years, Ten Lessons: My Greek Charter Marks DMA Yachting's Anniversary with a Decade Report on Greek Luxury Chartering

As DMA Yachting completes its tenth year, its flagship Mediterranean brand My Greek Charter publishes ten lessons from a decade of luxury Greek yacht chartering, from the superyacht rules that opened Greek waters to the American arrivals reshaping demand.

-- My Greek Charter, operated by DMA Yachting, marks the group's tenth anniversary with a report on how luxury yacht chartering in Greece has changed since 2016. Founded by former charter captain and crew Daniel and Martina Asmus, and joined from the earliest days by Yanna and Mo Pristas, the brokerage now spans more than a dozen destination brands, with Greece at the heart of its Mediterranean business throughout.

"When we started in 2016, chartering in Greece still ran on faxed brochures and a handshake," said Daniel Asmus, Founder of DMA Yachting. "Today the top Greek motor yacht weeks for the following July are reserved a year in advance, and clients arrive knowing exactly which yacht, which crew, and which bay they want. The market has never been more professional, or more rewarding for guests who plan properly."

The ten lessons from ten years:

1. Regulation remade the fleet. The 2022 e-Charter Permit let foreign-flagged superyachts over 35 meters start and end charters in Greek waters, and fleet quality has climbed every season since.

2. A smart route cuts the tax bill. Charter VAT has fallen from 24 percent to 13, and roughly half of that on qualifying open-water itineraries, so routing is now part of managing Greece yacht charter costs.

3. America discovered Greece by air. Eleven nonstop US routes and up to 103 weekly flights have made Americans the leading international market for Athens' airport.

4. The crewed catamaran became the family default. A niche choice in 2016 is now the most requested platform, with brand-new luxury catamarans in Greece entering service every season.

5. The yacht overtook the resort. Per person, a crewed yacht in Greece now competes with the islands' five-star resorts, and it adds a private itinerary, a dedicated crew, and a different bay every morning.

6. Athens went superyacht-grade. The 8-billion-euro Ellinikon project brings a 400-berth marina for yachts up to 80 meters to the Athens Riviera.

7. The meltemi taught flexibility. The Aegean's August wind pushed itineraries toward flexible routing and lifted the calmer Ionian, so choosing between Greece yacht charter areas is now the first conversation, not the last.

8. Luxury moved beyond Mykonos. Asked to name their favorite island, none of the Greek charter captains the company surveyed said Mykonos. Quiet alternatives like a Saronic Gulf yacht charter now define the insider trip.

9. First-hand beat brochures. The team has stepped aboard and reviewed thousands of yachts across the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, publishing Greece superyacht charters with exclusive footage so clients can judge by evidence.

10. The calendar stretched. Peak weeks book up to a year out, and small rules like jet ski licenses and turnaround declarations decide how smooth a charter feels.

"The relationships are the real asset of the decade," said Martina Asmus, Founder of DMA Yachting. "We hire brokers who are genuinely into yachts: sailors, ex-crew, people who have lived aboard. When we recommend a yacht in Greece, it is because someone from our team has stood on that deck."

Yanna Pristas has looked after many of the company's most established Mediterranean superyacht clients since the beginning, most of them repeat guests. "Ten years ago, I sometimes had to talk clients into Greece, because the biggest yachts simply were not based here," said Yanna Pristas, Superyacht Charter Broker at DMA Yachting. "Since the rules opened Greek waters to the large foreign-flagged yachts, that conversation has reversed. My repeat guests now come back every summer, and the service on a top Greek superyacht stands comparison with anywhere in the Mediterranean."

"You can read the decade in public numbers," said Mo Pristas, Yacht Charter Broker at DMA Yachting, who has tracked the market since the company began. "Athens went from a handful of nonstop US routes to eleven. Charter VAT fell from 24 percent to 13. And an 8-billion-euro project is building 400 marina berths on the Athens Riviera. Nobody builds superyacht berths for a market that is slowing down."
