Long Beach Container Terminal (LBCT), one of the world’s largest and most advanced cargo handling facilities, has scored 100 percent in the coveted GRESB benchmark for its exemplary performance in resiliency planning and risk management.
LBCT received the top score and a 5-star rating for its robust systems and strategies to mitigate climate-related operational and financial risks.
As it relates to environmental responsibility, LBCT is already considered a carbon-neutral operation and is well on its way to becoming a net-zero operation by 2030. LBCT’s $2.5 billion 15-year investment has contributed to optimal trade exchanges, a nearly 90 percent reduction in greenhouse gas and criteria pollutant emissions, and a quadrupling of its cargo-handling capacity.
“Long Beach Container Terminal continues to demonstrate the multiple benefits and cost effectiveness of a sustainable, strategic growth plan that takes advantage of proven positive technologies combined with a commitment to embed ethically responsible practices across the business,” said Anthony Otto, LBCT Chief Executive Officer. “This score is a testament to our LBCT team embedding sustainable practices as a part of our culture, and to the collaborative spirit among our supply chain partners and stakeholders.”
GRESB, the leading organization assessing the ESG performance of real assets worldwide, evaluates infrastructure and real estate portfolios based on their sustainability practices and outcomes. In the latest GRESB score, LBCT ranked first in the world among port- and transportation-related companies for its actual sustainable performance and for integrating responsible principles into its strategy and policies.
“This rating is a true testament as to how economic vitality and the environment can go hand in hand,” said Bonnie Nixon, LBCT’s Director of Sustainability.
LBCT’s Net Zero Action Plan and two progress reports can be found in the “About Us/Corporate Messages” tab of the company’s website.
