Ag-West Bio, Saskatchewan’s bioscience industry association, welcomes anyone with an interest in agriculture and food to join our annual meeting for a discussion about the environmental impact of agriculture.

Saskatchewan farmer and blogger Jake Leguee will deliver the keynote “The environmentally friendly farmer and the attack on modern agriculture.”

In his blog, A Year in the Life of a Farmer, Leguee shares his views on “the challenges we face as a society, with the perspective of someone who makes his living from Mother Nature, and world markets dominated by economics, politics, and human emotion.” He also writes about the frustration of hearing non-farmers discussing topics like regenerative agriculture, soil health, and farming practices to reduce carbon emissions, and trying to impose their views on how to ‘switch’ to better practices, reduce pesticide use, and grow more ‘sustainable’ crops.

Leguee says farmers don’t need people to tell them how to farm more sustainably. Farming has built in incentives that make sustainable practices the logical way to farm, and technology makes agriculture more sustainable—but it is also important that consumers accept the technology.

Leguee’s presentation will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Ag-West Bio President and CEO, Dr. Karen Churchill.

Panelists:

  • Jake Leguee (CEO, Leguee Farms)
  • Jeff Gross (COO, Pacific Ridge Trading Corp.)
  • Brett Casavant (CEO, C-Merak)
  • Alanna Koch (Chair, Global Institute for Food Security)

The event is free, and everyone is welcome to attend. The presentations will be followed by networking.
