Government technology executive and George Mason University alumnus will lead the university's governing board

RESTON, VA / ACCESS Newswire / August 24, 2026 / Unissant announced today that George Mason University's Board of Visitors (BOV) elected Unissant President and Chief Executive Officer Sumeet Shrivastava, MBA '94, as rector. The election took place at the BOV's first meeting of the 2026-27 fiscal year.

As rector, Shrivastava will serve a two-year term leading the university's 16-member governing board as George Mason begins work on its next strategic plan. Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger appointed him to the BOV in January 2026, and his fellow board members elected him vice rector the following month.

"Serving as rector is a chance to carry forward an institution that opened a door for my family," said Shrivastava. "George Mason is positioned to help lead the reinvention of higher education, not just within the Commonwealth but as an exemplar for the nation."

Shrivastava came to the United States as a child after his father earned a higher education scholarship. The family settled in Fairfax County, where his father later taught in George Mason's early computer science program and hired its graduates as he built ANSTEC. George Mason admitted Shrivastava to its executive MBA program based on his professional experience, and he graduated in 1994. His wife, Joya, is a George Mason graduate, and three of their four children are George Mason alumni or current students.

Shrivastava later served as president of the George Mason University Alumni Association and chair of the George Mason University Foundation Board of Trustees. His service with George Mason also includes helping launch the Baroni Center for Government Contracting, while his family provided the lead gift to establish George Mason's Shrivastava Family Success through Entrepreneurship Program, which supports aspiring entrepreneurs as they build businesses in Northern Virginia.

Since joining Unissant as President and CEO in 2024, Shrivastava has sharpened the company's focus across National Security and Federal Health while advancing a strategy grounded in mission obsession and delivery excellence. His more than 30-year government technology career includes leading ARRAY through its acquisition by CGI Federal. Earlier, he helped guide ANSTEC through its sale to Keane, now NTT DATA, and held senior leadership roles across Keane's public-sector and commercial businesses.

"Sumeet's relationship with George Mason spans his education and decades of service, with the university woven through his family's story," said Manish Malhotra, Founder and Chairman of Unissant. "He brings a long view of the institution and the discipline to help the Board govern through a period of change."
