In 2020, he was recruited to Temple University as a full professor and vice chair of education at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, and he serves as the chief of outpatient physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) Services at the Temple University Hospital System.

Setting the Foundation

Dr. O'Young's career has been aided by his academic achievements. He graduated salutatorian from Niles North High School and summa cum laude from Northwestern University in 1985, earning a bachelor's degree in biology with a concentration in neuroscience. He then furthered his education, obtaining a Doctor of Medicine in 1989 from Washington University and graduating from a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Hospitals and Clinics in 1993. Dr. O'Young then received licenses to practice medicine in both Pennsylvania and New York and holds board certifications in physical medicine and rehabilitation, as well as in pain medicine. He is also a certified physician acupuncturist.

A Distinguished Professional

As a distinguished professional, Dr. O'Young has received several awards for his international work. Among these honors is the Educational Award from the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine at NYU Medical Center in New York, presented during the Institute's 50th anniversary celebration and the World Health Organization's 50th anniversary in 1998 at the United Nations. In 2023, he received the International Visionary Award from the International Council for Caring Communities, a United Nations-recognized non-government organization, for his efforts in bringing together physicians to collaborate on initiatives for individuals with disabilities in support of the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This award was also presented at the United Nations. In 2025, he was honored with the Martin Grabois, MD, International Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Leadership Award by the Temple University Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation for his exceptional leadership in international education and collaboration.

Dr. O'Young is involved in various global efforts that focus on advocating for individuals with disabilities, addressing chronic pain and educating the next generation about physical and rehabilitation medicine.

Outside of work, Dr. O'Young enjoys spending time with his wife, Fangfang, and their three children - Aaron, Serena and Lucas. Looking to the future, he plans to further his international work, especially involving collaboration with the United Nations.
