Dialogues of Displacement Event Launches Footage's 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence and Violence Against Women and Girls

'To get out of Russia means to become free.'

NEW YORK, LONDON, PARIS, KYIV, ALMATY, November 21, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Footage will be hosting a groundbreaking online roundtable event Dialogues of Displacement on Monday, 28th November as part of its Together WeYOUnite! 16 Days of Activism. The activity supports the United Nations global campaign to raise awareness of gender based violence (#GBV) and violence against women and girls across the world.

The online roundtable will share the oral histories and artists' interpretation of the lived experiences of marginalized female-identifying participants forcibly displaced from dangerously intolerant contexts. This event will focus on those displaced from Russia because of oppression and state sanctioned violence – primarily identity based violence, and specifically the violence of forced displacement due to their identities (e.g., LGBTQI+, gendered identity, professional identity).

"We are inviting students, artists, feminists, the LGBTQI+ community, NGO's, humanitarians and human rights advocates to listen to these brave and resilient voices and to see the moving work of U.S. based artists through this online webinar," says co-founder and Executive Director, Dr. Kristen Ali Eglinton.

"Footage uses narrative and expressive approaches empowering young women around the world to connect as agents of social change. Our programs provide connection — a community for women on the frontlines of gender inequality where their ideas matter and their voices count," adds Kristen.

Artists who collaborated in interpreting the stories of those displaced are: Roxie Darling, Rebecca Pappa, Katherine Clarke Langlands, Sarah Bricke, Zoe Strong, Faith Mackey and Jabin Ahmed.

"This project has moved every one who has been a part of it, deeply. The pain and dislocation experienced by those who have been forced to flee communities for fear of persecution is immeasurable. Just by showing up and listening you keep some of the world's most silenced voices out of the shadows, so they are not forgotten."

All welcome at the online roundtable event on Monday, 28th November at 4.30pm GMT. It will be in both English and Russian, please register here.

About Footage Foundation: Footage is a U.S. based feminist organization raising voices to elevate lives through creative research, wellbeing interventions, and advocacy—all advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Footage has received nine Public Diplomacy awards from the U.S. Department of State to design and implement programs focusing on women and violence primarily in the Post-Soviet region. A nonprofit organization founded by PhD colleagues at Cambridge University, Footage uses narrative and expressive approaches empowering young women around the world to connect as agents of social change. Our programs provide connection — a community for women on the frontlines of gender inequality where their ideas matter and their voices count. We have a particular focus on forced displacement and gender-based violence and believe compassion and connection are as important to sustainable development as food and water.

Girl-talk-Girl connects young women worldwide, using mobile digital storytelling (2-5 minute multimedia narratives produced on mobile phones) to spark dialogue and change around the gender-based violence present in their lives.
