ISurTec Enables Lubricous Hydrophilic Coatings for Silicone Rubber and other Difficult-to-Coat Surfaces used in Medical Devices

By: PRLog

Medical Device Engineers Can Now Achieve Over 90% Reduction in Frictional Force on Substrates such as Silicone Rubber, PEEK, Polyimide, and Silicon.

ST. PAUL, Minn. - July 29, 2021 - PRLog -- Innovative Surface Technologies (ISurTec), a leading provider of lubricious coating solutions for the healthcare industry, announced the launch of PhotoPrime® SR 330 Primer, a new technology to enable and simplify hydrophilic coating across a broad range of medical and biotech devices. Hydrophilic coatings on medical devices typically achieve a lubricity coefficient of friction (CoF) less than 0.02, reducing tissue damage by allowing coated devices to easily glide into and throughout the body.

PhotoPrime SR is a base coat designed to enable hydrophilic hydrogel coating of challenging substrates, such as silicone rubber, stainless steel, nitinol, aluminum, PEEK, and HDPE, as well as common semiconductor substrates such as ceramics, silicon, and silicon nitride.   Current high-lubricity technologies with these substrates typically achieves a CoF in the range of 0.25 to 0.40 and achieving better performance would require complex plasma or chemical treatment.  PhotoPrime SR is applied using a straightforward UV cure procedure, saving time and money.

"Our customers are excited by the results they've seen, from applying the technology for use in drug-eluting catheters to application on silicon nitride chips," said Dr. Kristin Taton, Director of Science and Engineering at ISurTec. "We're enabling our customers to bring new solutions and technologies to the market."

PhotoPrime SR® is now available worldwide. For more information on PhotoPrime SR®, visit https://www.isurtec.com/medical-device-coatings/photoprime-sr/
