What Happened?

Shares of biotechnology company United Therapeutics (NASDAQ: UTHR) fell 4% in the afternoon session after Goldman Sachs initiated coverage of the stock with a Sell rating.

Goldman Sachs analyst Andrea Newkirk began covering the biotechnology company with the negative rating. A Sell rating signals that the analyst expects the stock to perform worse than the broader market or its peers, which can prompt some investors to reduce their positions.

New coverage from a major investment bank often draws attention because it adds a fresh view on the company's valuation and outlook.

After the initial drop, the shares shed some of the losses and rose to $470.94, down 3.8% from the previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us

United Therapeutics’s shares are not very volatile and have only had 5 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful, although it might not be something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 6 months ago when the stock gained 12.7% on the news that the company announced its TETON-1 pivotal study of Tyvaso met its primary endpoint for the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a type of lung disease. The study showed that its drug, nebulized Tyvaso, was superior to a placebo in improving lung function. Specifically, the treatment improved what is known as forced vital capacity (FVC), a key measure of lung health, by 130.1 mL over 52 weeks.

In addition to improving FVC, the drug also reduced the risk of clinical worsening for patients. The positive results were consistent across all patient subgroups and did not raise new safety concerns.

United Therapeutics is down 5.2% since the beginning of the year, and at $470.94 per share, it is trading 21.1% below its 52-week high of $596.76 from May 2026. Despite the year-to-date decline, investors who bought $1,000 worth of United Therapeutics’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $2,414.
