What Happened?

Shares of alternative investment management firm Hamilton Lane (NASDAQ: HLNE) jumped 2.2% in the afternoon session after Bloomberg completed its acquisition of Canoe Intelligence, an AI-powered private-markets data platform that counted Hamilton Lane among its backers. According to Bloomberg’s press release, Canoe automates private-markets data collection and delivery. Hamilton Lane invested alongside Blackstone Innovations Investments, Carlyle AlpInvest, Goldman Sachs Alternatives, and Nasdaq Ventures. Bloomberg said the deal advances its push to transform private-markets investing—keeping HLNE in the narrative as a strategic early backer of the platform.

The shares closed the day at $88.64, up 2.1% from the previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Hamilton Lane’s shares are quite volatile and have had 17 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 11 months ago when the stock gained 6.7% on the news that the company reported third-quarter 2025 results that significantly surpassed analyst expectations. The alternative investment management firm posted revenue of $190.9 million, a 27.3% increase from the same period in the previous year and 12.8% above Wall Street's estimates. Earnings per share also showed significant strength, with adjusted EPS of $1.54, which was nearly 40% higher than the analyst consensus of $1.10. The strong performance was supported by management fees that also beat expectations, growing 18.7% year-on-year. The positive results led the stock to trade up following the announcement.

Hamilton Lane is down 35.1% since the beginning of the year, and at $88.65 per share, it is trading 42.4% below its 52-week high of $153.84 from January 2026. Despite the year-to-date decline, investors who bought $1,000 worth of Hamilton Lane’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $1,035.
