Calgary, 2015. Jocelyn Zhang takes first place at the Alberta Music Festival provincial competition. The following year she does it again, and this time she goes further: she represents the province of Alberta at the Canadian National Music Competition, one of the most prestigious classical music contests in the country. She is still a teenager. What looks from the outside like early momentum is, from the inside, something simpler: a decision to show up, prepared, every time. That habit did not go away when she left Canada.

Some performers measure a career in concert halls. Zhang has played in retirement homes too. At Meadowood Retirement Home in Indiana, she brought chamber music to residents who rarely get to hear live performance up close. At Mt Auburn Presbyterian Church and Calgary First Baptist Church, among others, she has performed for a range of audiences, from congregations to ticketed attendees. With the Cincinnati Flute Society Flute Choir, she found a different kind of room altogether, an ensemble built entirely around her own instrument, where the dynamic is less soloist and more community.

What fewer people know is that she had been teaching since she was thirteen. From 2013 through 2023, she gave private lessons in flute, piano, and music theory to students ranging from seven to thirty years old, designing lessons around individual needs rather than fixed curricula. A decade of that, running alongside her own performing career. She did not stop when she crossed the country for a conservatory degree. She kept teaching.

Two performances stand out for reasons beyond the music itself. With the Centre Street Church Orchestra, Jocelyn Zhang played a benefit concert to raise funds for Compassion Canada, an organization that works to support children and families facing poverty. At Christ Church and Knox United Church in Calgary, she performed in concerts that raised money for the Calgary Child Advocacy Center, which supports survivors of child abuse.

The Chautauqua Institution in New York is not a festival that accepts everyone. Founded in the nineteenth century, its music program operates each summer as a compressed season of professional-level orchestral work, drawing applicants from conservatories across North America. A residency there is both a performance opportunity and a statement about where a musician stands in the field. Zhang was there in the summer of 2023, performing with the Chautauqua Music Festival Orchestra at the Chautauqua Amphitheater, an outdoor venue that seats more than four thousand people. She was not just accepted. She was awarded two scholarships for the residency, the Allen and Elizabeth Wood Scholarship and the A. Chace Anderson Fine and Performing Arts Scholarship. Both competitive. Both given to the same person.

That same year she performed at the Trentino Music Festival in Italy, where the orchestra staged Strauss at the Auditorium Intercomunale Primiero in the Dolomites. The following summer brought the Brott Music Festival in Hamilton, Ontario. Zhang was one of two flutists selected for the entire program, a festival known for the professional level it demands from every chair.

She has also performed Shakespeare. At the Monroe County Civic Theater in Indiana, she played for a production of Shakespeare in the Park, an outdoor setting that trades the concert hall for something closer to where music began. With the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra, she took part in an education concert designed specifically for young audiences, a different kind of stage than the festival circuit but no less demanding in what it asks of a performer. Jocelyn Zhang plays for whoever is in the room, whether that room holds four thousand people or forty.
