What Happened?

Shares of school bus company Blue Bird (NASDAQ: BLBD) fell 13.8% in the afternoon session after the company reported a mixed second quarter, delivering significant top-line and volume growth that was offset by a slight earnings miss. Revenue jumped 29.9% year-over-year to $517.2 million, comfortably beating Wall Street's $498.1 million estimate, driven by a massive 42.9% surge in sales volumes.

Profitability at the operating level was also a bright spot, with Adjusted EBITDA coming in at $71.38 million (an 8.5% beat against consensus). However, a minor miss on Adjusted EPS ($1.28 versus the $1.30 estimate) and management's decision to merely reaffirm—rather than raise—full-year revenue and EBITDA guidance kept a lid on the stock, which traded flat at $76.30 following the print.

Despite the muted market reaction to the headline numbers, Blue Bird's underlying operational momentum validates the long-term thesis. The company is aggressively capitalizing on a massive, multi-year school bus replacement cycle. Furthermore, with federal funding accelerating the industry's shift toward low-and-no-emission vehicles, Blue Bird's staggering 43% volume growth this quarter highlights its pole position in the market.

As the company continues to command a vastly superior non-diesel (EV and propane) sales mix compared to its legacy rivals, it remains uniquely positioned to capture the lion's share of this secular transition.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Blue Bird’s shares are somewhat volatile and have had 13 moves greater than 5% over the last year. But moves this big are rare even for Blue Bird and indicate this news significantly impacted the market’s perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 17 days ago when the stock gained 4% on the news that Barclays lifted its price target on the stock to $85 from $75 while reiterating an Overweight rating. The analyst note was tied to a broader reset of machinery and construction forecasts ahead of the second quarter. Barclays argued that production trends, new awards, firm pricing, and ongoing acquisitions supported a solid outlook into 2026.

Furthermore, Blue Bird's strong cash generation and healthier balance sheet provided room to fund electric-vehicle programs and plant investments without heavily relying on new debt, helping it navigate industry cycles. Following the price target increase, the stock reached an all-time high. However, analysts cautioned that recent revenue declines and current production capacity limits meant growth could be slower than anticipated, particularly if government funding or tariff policies shifted against the sector.

Blue Bird is up 43.1% since the beginning of the year, but at $66.91 per share, it is still trading 17.9% below its 52-week high of $81.50 from July 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Blue Bird’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $2,834.
