What Happened?

A number of stocks jumped in the afternoon session after strong Prime Day sales data and falling Treasury yields boosted sentiment for digital platforms.

Alphabet rose 1% (aided by its upcoming Dow inclusion), while peers like Meta and Pinterest found support despite the broader Nasdaq's 0.4% decline. U.S. online sales hit $8.3 billion, up 5.3% year-over-year, while the 10-year Treasury yield fell below 4.5%.

Consumer internet companies, particularly those reliant on digital advertising, need healthy consumer spending to justify ad budgets. The record $8.3 billion in Prime Day sales signals that consumer demand remains robust, which in turn gives advertisers the confidence to keep spending on platforms like Google and Meta. Additionally, falling yields lower the discount rate applied to these companies' future cash flows, supporting their multiples.

The stock market overreacts to news, and big price drops can present good opportunities to buy high-quality stocks.

Among others, the following stocks were impacted:

Zooming In On Etsy (ETSY)

Etsy’s shares are extremely volatile and have had 31 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 9 days ago when the stock gained 3.3% on the news that oil prices and yields fell as the Trump Administration announced a new peace deal that would lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Consumer internet companies are priced on future earnings. When the 10-year yield dropped to 4.41%, the discount rate applied to forward cash flows decreased, lifting present values across the group. Below the valuation mechanics, there is a demand signal: platforms that earn advertising revenue depend on consumer willingness to spend, which is directly connected to confidence levels and the discretionary income freed up by lower petrol prices.

Advertisers who reduced budgets during the period of macro uncertainty begin reallocating when the environment stabilizes. The peace deal also eases the operational risk for companies with advertising clients and user bases across the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions.

Etsy is up 36.6% since the beginning of the year, and at $78.22 per share, it has set a new 52-week high. Despite the year-to-date gain, investors who bought $1,000 worth of Etsy’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at only $431.00.

ONE MORE THING: The $21 AI Application Stock Wall Street Forgot. While Wall Street obsesses over who’s building AI, one company is already using it to print money. And nobody’s paying attention.

AI chip stocks trade at ridiculous valuations. This company processes a trillion consumer signals monthly using AI and trades at a third of the price. The gap won’t last. The institutions will figure it out. You need to see this first. Read the FREE Report Before They Notice.
