"We delivered a strong third quarter, highlighted by net sales growth of 20% or more across our segments, REVOLVE and FWRD, and in domestic and international markets," said co-founder and co-CEO Mike Karanikolas. "Supporting our top-line momentum was 18% growth in active customers year-over-year, our fourth consecutive quarter of growth acceleration."

Revenue growth

Examining a company’s long-term performance can provide clues about its quality. Even a bad business can perform well for one or two quarters, but a high-quality one grows for years. Revolve’s revenue grew at a mediocre 8.6% compounded annual growth rate over the last three years, falling short of our benchmark for the consumer internet sector.

Revolve quarterly revenue

This quarter, Revolve reported strong year-on-year revenue growth of 20.4%, and its $356 million in revenue topped Wall Street’s consensus estimates by 3%.

Looking ahead, sell-side analysts expect revenue to grow 8.9% over the next 12 months, according to S&P, similar to its three-year rate. This projection is underwhelming and suggests its newer products and services will not accelerate its top-line performance yet.

Active customers

Buyer growth

As an online retailer, Revolve generates revenue growth by expanding its number of users and the average order size in dollars.

Over the last two years, Revolve’s active customers, a key performance metric for the company, increased by 8.2% annually to 3.24 million in the latest quarter. This growth rate is decent for a consumer internet business and indicates customers enjoy its offerings.

Revolve active customers

In Q3, Revolve added 496,000 active customers, leading to 18.1% year-on-year growth. The quarterly growth rate was higher than its two-year result, suggesting its new initiatives are accelerating buyer growth.

Revenue per buyer

Average revenue per buyer, or ARPB, is a critical metric to track because it measures how much customers spend per order.

Revolve’s ARPB growth has been mediocre over the last two years, averaging 3.6%. Still, the increase in active customers is more relevant for assessing long-term business potential. If Revolve tries boosting ARPB by taking a more aggressive approach to monetization, it’s unclear whether its buyer base can continue growing at the current pace.

Revolve ARPB

This quarter, Revolve’s ARPB was $109.76. It grew by 2% year on year, slower than its buyer growth.

Key takeaways from Revolve’s Q3 results

Revolve’s buyer count grew this quarter, and revenue topped Wall Street’s consensus estimates, giving the quarter some key positives. Still, investors were likely hoping for more: shares fell 4.6% to $20.54 immediately after the results.

Is Revolve a buy at its current price? That decision should take into account valuation, business quality and the latest earnings. For more on those factors, read the full research report here (it’s free).
