Impinj’s third quarter results were received positively by the market, driven by robust demand for its RFID endpoint ICs and strong execution across key customer segments. Management attributed the performance to sustained momentum in retail and supply chain logistics, as well as ongoing adoption by lighthouse accounts and growth in the M800 product line. CEO Chris Diorio emphasized that “resilient retail demand, growth at our lighthouse accounts and Gen2X momentum all contributed to the record results,” while also noting the company’s ability to ramp post-processing throughput to keep pace with customer requirements.

While we enjoy listening to the management’s commentary, our favorite part of earnings calls is the analyst questions. Those are unscripted and can often highlight topics that management teams would rather avoid or topics where the answer is complicated. Here is what has caught our attention.

Our top 5 analyst questions from Impinj’s Q3 earnings call

  • Harsh Kumar (BMO) asked about the drivers for seasonality being less pronounced than usual in Q4. CFO Cary Baker pointed to broad-based demand across retail, logistics, and the return of specialty IC revenue, adding that “specialty IC revenue return…is modest, but it is certainly helping that equation.”
  • James Ricchiuti (Needham & Company) pressed for details on systems and gateway sales. Baker explained that strong Q3 systems sales reflected project timing, with certain deployments shifting into Q1 2027, and added, “we’re not going to hit the typical seasonal lift in Q4, but that reverses course in the first part of 2027.”
  • Christopher Rolland (Susquehanna) inquired about supply chain constraints and backlog. CEO Chris Diorio clarified that back-end post-processing capacity is the bottleneck and that the company is investing to own more process steps, while Baker added that backlog has increased and orders are already booked into Q1 next year.
  • Nicholas Igneri (Barclays) asked about the software beta timeline and milestones. Diorio responded that commercial availability is “measured in months, not quarters,” and Baker said initial revenue impact would be modest, ramping with enterprise adoption in 2027 and beyond.
  • Scott Searle (ROTH Capital) questioned how software will be monetized and the potential for channel inventory missteps. Diorio described plans for an integrated platform sales approach, and Baker noted improved visibility from custom ICs has reduced inventory risk but acknowledged the company must “prove it” in Q1 2027.

Catalysts in upcoming quarters

In the coming quarters, our analysts will be watching (1) execution on capacity expansion and how well back-end processing investments translate to improved order fulfillment, (2) the pace and scale of early enterprise software revenue as deployments move from beta to commercial launch, and (3) signs of sustained demand and new customer wins in food, retail, and logistics. The impact of specialty IC sales and management’s ability to maintain gross margins despite cost pressures will also be key metrics to track.

Impinj currently trades at $176.11, in line with $176.48 just before the earnings. At this price, is it a buy or sell? Find out in our full research report (it’s free).
