With Millennials Losing Hair Younger Than Ever, New Advanced Treatments Emerge

Thinning hair is an age-old concern for both men and women, but Millennials and Gen Z around the world seem to be losing their hair younger than ever. Modern medical advancements are helping them fight back in ways previous generations couldn't.

-- Hair loss seems to be starting at younger ages worldwide, possibly associated with trends in poor nutrition, rising stress, and sedentary lifestyles. However, sometimes modern problems have modern solutions. Clinics and hair growth specialists are developing advanced serums, stem cell treatments, and even light therapy to help individuals reclaim their hair in ways their parents never imagined.

One such clinic, Lydian Cosmetic Surgery Clinic, aims to raise awareness of stem cell therapy for hair growth and scalp recovery for younger generations in the wider Seoul area.

Sixty percent of Chinese university students surveyed reported that they were losing significant amounts of hair in their 20s. Patterns seem to be the same in Europe, the United States, and elsewhere across the globe; American dermatologists and hair stylists report that younger clients than ever are bringing hair loss concerns to them, looking for solutions.

Pinpointing the exact problem is difficult, as experts see a number of risk factors on the rise. Known causes of hair loss, like autoimmune problems, thyroid issues, and hormonal changes, are all increasing. Both poor nutrition and vegetarian and vegan diets - often lower in protein, zinc, and Vitamin D - can negatively impact hair growth.

Additionally, increased stress levels and cortisol hormones can affect hair growth cycles, with many dermatologists saying that stress is a key factor in an increasingly fractious, post-pandemic world.

To address these challenges, researchers have developed a variety of solutions - from over-the-counter products with ingredients like biotin, zinc, and collagen to prescription medications like Minoxidil, Finasteride, or corticosteroids.

More invasive procedures have also gained popularity with those who don't respond to medication. For example, hair grafting takes hair from one part of the body and transplants it to the scalp. Designed for the top and back of the head, scalp reduction removes hairless skin from the scalp so that hair-bearing skin can be expanded to fill in gaps.

Other advanced procedures include light therapy, also known as low-level laser therapy, which directs medical-grade lights at the scalp to stimulate hair follicles. And some cosmetic clinics like South Korea's Lydian Cosmetic Surgery Clinic offer adipose-based stem cell treatment to stimulate dormant hair follicles.

As hair loss becomes more prevalent, it may be difficult to isolate specific causes, experts warn. And with thinning hair being increasingly universal, solving the mystery may be less important than correcting the problem with newly emerging treatments.
