Food for Health: Advocates Call on Gov. Newsom to Backfill SNAP Cuts

As Veterans’ Day approaches, Food for Health – a free, nutritious fresh food distribution program created by AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) and Housing Is A Human Right, the housing advocacy arm of AHF, are hosting a press conference Friday morning (11/7 @ 08:00) in front of the Ronald Reagan State Office Building to call on California Governor Gavin Newsom to backfill funding for SNAP benefits that ceased on November 1st. SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) is known as CalFresh in California. It serves close to 5.5 million people including families, seniors, veterans, and the disabled across the state, including 2 million children.

An estimated 115,000 California veterans receive SNAP benefits. Nationally, approximately 26% of active-duty service members may be vulnerable to food scarcity or lack reliable access to food, highlighting the need for assistance programs like SNAP.
