MANCHESTER, UK

North Cheshire Forestry Services has started offering a new Ash Dieback Management Service to homeowners, landowners and businesses across Stockport. This Stockport tree surgeon has worked with trees since 1976 and has seen plenty of problems over the years.

One issue that has become increasingly common is ash dieback. The fungus Hymenoscyphus fraxineus is responsible for it, and it has been found in ash trees throughout the UK and in Stockport and other areas of Greater Manchester.

New service will include inspection, a determination of disease stage and a set of options for the future, pruning, tree removal, or a tree watched over time. Nothing about the approach is new to the company itself. What has changed is that ash dieback now has its own dedicated process, rather than being handled case by case.

Wilting leaves during the growing season, small diamond-shaped marks on the bark, dead wood within the crown, these are some of the early signs owners are being asked to look out for. Trees near roads, driveways, footpaths or buildings tend to get looked at first, simply because that is where a falling branch would do the most damage.

Staff are NPTC certified in safe chainsaw operation and climbing, and work is performed in accordance with the British Standard for tree care, BS3998. A visit under the new service normally involves a walk-round survey, a written record of the condition of the tree and a discussion regarding what to do next. Final decision is at the hands of the property owner.

"We had noticed more people asking about their ash trees over the last couple of seasons," said Christopher A. Whyatt, who runs North Cheshire Forestry Services. "A lot of them were not sure what to look for, or what their choices were once dieback had been confirmed. This service is really about giving people that information properly."

The company was set up in 1976 by Christopher N. Whyatt and has been run by his son since he stepped back. In that time it has covered tree removal, pruning, hedge trimming and stump grinding for customers across Stockport and the North West. The ash dieback work is simply the newest addition to that list, from a tree surgeon Stockport residents have gone back to for close to fifty years.

Quotes for the inspection, like the rest of the company's work, are free and come with no obligation. Anyone unsure whether a tree on their property is affected is welcome to get in touch and ask.

On the insurance side, the company carries public and employers' liability cover of up to 5,000,000, works from a written health and safety policy, and runs risk assessments before every job. Cones and signage go up wherever work is close to a public footpath or road, and PPE is standard for anyone on site.

North Cheshire Forestry Services appears on several local trader lists, among them Derbyshire Trusted Trader, the Oldham Trade Safe Scheme, Trafford's Better Business Scheme and Bury's Registered Tradesman Scheme. It is also a member of the Confederation of Forest Industries, Forestry Contracting Association and the Arboricultural Association.

The company doesn't throw away the wood from jobs that are finished, and doesn't do work during the bird nesting period. Small things, but part of how a Stockport tree surgeon with this much history tends to operate.

Anyone in Stockport, Marple, High Peak or South Manchester looking to book an ash dieback inspection, or any other tree work, can reach North Cheshire Forestry Services by phone or email.
