Dr. Marjorie Belsky Calls for Greater Support for Women in Medicine and Healthcare Leadership

Dr. Marjorie Belsky, MD, JD, a physician and healthcare leader, is speaking out about the need for stronger support systems and equal opportunities for women in medicine.

LAS VEGAS, NV / ACCESS Newswire / March 30, 2026 / Across the healthcare industry, women now make up a large share of the workforce. Yet many still face barriers to leadership, recognition, and equal professional footing. Physician and attorney Dr. Marjorie Belsky, MD, JD, is raising awareness about those challenges and encouraging more open conversations about equity in medical workplaces.

With more than two decades in anesthesiology, pain management, and healthcare leadership, Dr. Belsky has experienced firsthand how workplace culture can shape career paths.

"Working with male associates is always difficult due to a culture of subordinating female associates. I stay professional because work is work," Belsky says.

Her message is not about conflict. It is about progress.

"Never catastrophize, because there is always a resolution," she adds.

Why Gender Equity in Medicine Still Matters

Women now represent a major part of the healthcare workforce, but leadership positions remain uneven.

According to data from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC):

  • Women make up over 37% of practicing physicians in the United States.

  • They represent more than 50% of medical school students.

  • Yet only about 18% of hospital CEOs and around 16% of medical school deans are women.

Research also shows that women physicians often face higher burnout rates and slower promotion timelines compared with male colleagues.

These gaps matter not only for professionals but for healthcare systems as a whole.

Studies published in medical journals have shown that diverse leadership teams often lead to better organizational decision-making, improved patient outcomes, and stronger workplace cultures.

For Belsky, improving these systems begins with awareness and persistence.

"I don't think the opinion of others matters. I give everything 100%, and that is success in itself," she says.

A Career at the Intersection of Medicine and Law

Dr. Belsky's career reflects the complexity of modern healthcare.

She built and owned West Sunset Surgery Center and operated a pain management practice for more than 20 years. She later expanded her work into healthcare systems and policy, serving as a Physician Field Director for Evolent Health Corporation.

Alongside her medical career, she pursued legal training and completed certification in intellectual property law at the University of New Hampshire Franklin Pierce School of Law.

Her work has included academic publications, medical research, and legal scholarship, including a paper titled "The Scarlet C".

She has also participated in healthcare industry discussions, including leading a panel at the Becker's Healthcare Annual Meeting and appearing on the Becker's Healthcare Podcast.

Through each stage of her career, she has emphasized continuous learning.

"Clearly, I love school and find that is always a big motivator," Belsky says.

Encouraging the Next Generation of Women Leaders

Dr. Belsky believes that one of the most powerful ways to change workplace culture is to support the next generation.

That means encouraging education, mentorship, and persistence in the face of challenges.

"Patience," she says simply when asked about the most important trait for long-term success.

Her advice is also practical.

"Treat each day as its own entity. What does not get finished eventually will."

She believes professionals should focus on steady progress rather than perfection.

What Individuals Can Do

While systemic change takes time, Belsky believes individuals can take meaningful steps in their own lives and workplaces.

Some actions include:

  • Supporting mentorship programs for women in medicine and science

  • Encouraging educational opportunities in healthcare and STEM fields

  • Promoting respectful workplace cultures that value collaboration and fairness

  • Recognizing and elevating women's professional achievements

These efforts can start at the personal level, within workplaces, academic institutions, and professional networks.

Belsky emphasizes that balance and resilience are essential along the way.

"Work-life balance is a continuum and probably the toughest daily endeavor," she says.

For her, the foundation remains simple.

"Family, friends, animals, kindness, and peace at home."

A Call for Continued Progress

As healthcare continues to evolve, conversations about equity and leadership will remain central to the profession's future.

Dr. Belsky believes progress happens when professionals remain committed to both excellence and fairness.

Her advice to others navigating demanding careers is straightforward.

"Never catastrophize, because there is always a resolution."

Call to Action

Individuals interested in supporting women in medicine can start by:

  • Mentoring students interested in healthcare careers

  • Supporting organizations that promote women in STEM and medicine

  • Encouraging inclusive leadership practices in workplaces and institutions

  • Sharing educational resources that highlight women's contributions to healthcare

Even small actions can help strengthen pathways for future leaders.
