Dr. Lary has built a distinguished career in epidemiology and toxicology, working extensively with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and as a toxicology consultant at Hood & Associates. He began his career in 1968 as a research biologist at the CDC, where he advanced to various roles, including research grants director, epidemiologist and toxicologist. From 1979 to 1988, Dr. Lary served as an adjunct professor at the University of Cincinnati, where he taught in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the School of Medicine and the School of Public Health. Dr. Lary's most significant contribution to public health was his collaboration on research that discovered the preventive effects of folic acid on severe birth defects. This breakthrough has had a profound and lasting impact on public health, preventing numerous birth defects.

Outside of his professional endeavors, Dr. Lary has dedicated a significant amount of time to civic service. He volunteered for tornado recovery efforts in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and contributed to church activities and medical missions in Brazil and Kenya. Dr. Lary's achievements also extend to athletics. Between 2004 and 2010, he was ranked No. 6 worldwide in the decathlon for his age group and No. 5 in the world in the outdoor pentathlon. Additionally, he was a member of the USA Track and Field Masters Team, winning three medals at the 2008 World Championship event in Florida.
