Beginning a Professional Career
After graduating in 1969, Dr. Hagiopol joined the Petrochim Institute in Ploiești as a chemical engineer, where he directly applied his skills in the field. By 1972, he had transitioned into becoming a scientist at the Petru Poni Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry. In this role, he made significant contributions to research in macromolecular chemistry, which inspired him to pursue further studies. From 1977 to 1998, Dr. Hagiopol was a scientist at the Center for Plastic Materials, ICECHIM.
Applying Expertise in the United States
It was in 1998 that Dr. Hagiopol's career brought him from Romania to the United States, and he became a visiting scientist at Lehigh University. For the next two years, he collaborated with leading researchers and expanded his knowledge of polymer science. In 2000, he joined Georgia-Pacific Chemicals LLC as a scientist, where he contributed to various research initiatives until 2013. He was then promoted to research fellow and worked with the company for another four years in that position. By 2018, he had moved away from research to become an independent consultant.
Dr. Hagiopol's Notable Achievements and Contributions
Throughout his career in chemistry, Dr. Hagiopol has achieved many notable milestones. He is the co-inventor of 10 patents in Romania and 47 patents in the U.S., he is the co-author of several scientific books and 20 scientific articles published in the Journal of Applied Polymer Science, Colloid and Polymer Science, Makromolekulare Chimie, Acta Polymerica, the Journal of Polymer Science, the Journal of Macromolecular Science, TAPPI Journal and Macromolecules.
In addition to his co-contributions, Dr. Hagiopol is also the author or co-author of several creative works, primarily composed of scientific writings. He wrote ‘Copolymerization-Towards a Systematic Approach' through Kluwer-Springer in 1999, ‘Chemistry of Modern Papermaking' through CRC Press in 2011, ‘Reference Module in Material Science and Materials Engineering' through Elsevier in 2016, ‘Natural Polyphenols from Wood: Tannin and Lignin-An Industrial Perspective' through Elseiver in 2021 and ‘Scientific Truth in a Post-Truth Era, a Review' through Science & Education in 2024. Additionally, he contributed to a chapter on copolymers in the ‘Encyclopedia of Condensed Matter Physics' for Elsevier in 2005.
