About Mr. Melvin Colón

Mr. Colón was born and raised in Puerto Rico. In 1990, his first job was a temporary position in the pharmaceutical and food industry. He later found a permanent role with better pay, eager to take on more responsibilities and learn more about the industry.

Later, Mr. Colón earned a bachelor's degree in industrial chemistry from the Universidad de Puerto Rico in 1997, a master's degree in engineering management in 2000, and a master's degree in manufacturing competitiveness from the Universidad Politécnica de Puerto Rico in 2010. After his graduation, he worked for some time in a quality control lab before deciding to apply for a position in product disposition, which entails releasing a product to market by reviewing and approving the manufacturing batch and packaging batch records. Out of 15 internal candidates, Mr. Colón was selected and transitioned to a new position in the company. "It's not the same as when you are in college," he says. "When you go to the field, you realize that there is a big world out there."

As he took on more responsibilities, Mr. Colón was promoted to the manufacturing area as a process specialist, a position he did not originally apply for. Although he lacked prior manufacturing experience, the manufacturing director trusted his abilities. He learned to validate drug manufacturing processes, equipment, and facilities, including the issuance of the validation plan, protocol and reports.

"I started doing validations for process equipment, facilities, utilities, scale-ups, etc., while I was also pursuing my master's degree. I decided to move into the consulting field because I wanted to learn more," Mr. Colón says.

Today, Mr. Colón has worked as a consultant in the pharmaceutical industry for over two decades. He is an expert in implementing quality systems, conducting validations for processes, facilities, computerized systems and equipment, as well as managing remediation projects and performing inspections and audits. His work is vital to ensuring a facility runs safely and meets regulatory standards, ensuring it is inspection-ready.

"I always show my clients that I know what I'm talking about," Mr. Colón says. "I'm a subject matter expert in this field, so they can trust my recommendations. I always provide: this is what regulation requires, this is what the regulation says, this is the mindset of the regulators and this is what will happen if you don't follow my guidance". However, at the end of the day, he supports the business decision.

Mr. Colón's consulting work has taken him all over the world. His most recent project was in Iceland, where he was the leader of a cleaning validation project. He and his team were responsible for implementing a new, clean validation system for aseptic processing.

Making an Impact in the Pharmaceutical Industry

As with any industry, there have been many advancements in technology in the pharmaceutical industry, including embracing artificial intelligence (AI). Though Mr. Colón has worked with AI and found it helpful.

In the upcoming years, Mr. Colón aspires to have a significant impact on the pharmaceutical industry through collaborations with companies to ensure they are prepared for inspections and avoid negative observations. For his expertise in his field, Mr. Colón was honored with inclusion in Marquis Who's Who in July 2025.
