Call for Short Story Submissions for Anthology about Poverty

Call for Short Story Submissions for Anthology about PovertyMadville Publishing's new anthology, Sticks & Bricks: Stories from the Wrong Side of Town, will explore characters surviving in poverty in rural and urban settings.Madville Publishing has announced a call for fiction for a new anthology focused on stories dealing with working class and poverty class characters from both rural and urban settings.

Lake Dallas, Texas - Sep 9, 2022 - Texas-based Madville Publishing is accepting fiction submissions for a new literary anthology titled Sticks & Bricks: Stories from the Wrong Side of Town, which will focus on rural and urban poverty.

“We seldom see stories dealing with working class and poverty class characters from both rural and urban settings brought together,” says editor and author Luanne Smith. “What are the similarities and differences with the struggles in both locations? What does a look at them together tell us about our lives? Class can simply be the backdrop of the story, though; place, rural or urban, simply the setting. The story can focus on any conflict.”

Joining Smith, three additional editors — Ana Castillo, Michael Gills, and T.E. Wilderson — will be working on the collection. Sticks & Bricks is the fourth in a series of books telling stories about people who live on the edges of society: Runaway: An Anthology (2020), Taboos & Transgressions: Stories of Wrongdoing (2021), and Muddy Backroads: Stories from off the Beaten Path (2022).

The publication date for Sticks & Bricks is 2023. For those wishing to submit stories for consideration, the word count is 7,500 or fewer. The editors are accepting fiction only (no poetry or nonfiction) through Submittable, and there is an $8 reading fee. Writers whose stories have been chosen will be notified before the end of January 2023.

Madville founder and director, Kim Davis, says, “We regret having to charge a reading fee, but as an independent publisher, we rely on these fees to offset the costs of publishing.”

The submissions period closes on Nov. 30, 2022.

Madville Publishing was founded by Kim Davis in 2018. Its mission is to produce, publish, and market literary works of the highest quality that reflect the diversity of the modern English-speaking world, with the goal to discover and showcase those that might otherwise be overlooked and to provide opportunities for voices that might otherwise be unheard.

From now through October 31st, anyone who visits https://madvillepublishing.com/fans-of-luanne/ and uses the coupon code fansofluanne will receive 10 percent off any of the previous books in the series.
