Cherry Tung did not always have the goal of pursuing FI/RE, until she was unexpectedly fired from her 6 figure job in the midst of the pandemic, when her mental health was at its worst. After experiencing corporate burnout as well as clinically diagnosed severe Anxiety and Depression, Tung decided to turn her crisis of being fired into an opportunity to pursue FI/RE, as well as teach her method of FI/RE to more freedom seekers. From her 8 years of experience building multiple income streams, she summarized all the steps she took to retire early inside of a system that she name the Passive Income Ecosystem.
Being in the personal finance space for the past couple years, Cherry noticed that the “mainstream” early retirement advice are highly flawed. Most personal finance gurus like to emphasize the importance of saving and investing, but they rarely mention the importance of making more money first. From Cherry’s personal experience and observation from coaching her clients, she noticed that most people do not have a savings problem; they have an income problem. Saving and investing with a limited income does not actually help people retire early. For example, a 7% return on a $500 portfolio is $35 a year, while a 7% return on a $500,000 portfolio is $35,000. The biggest needle mover for most FI/RE enthusiasts is income, not merely saving and investing more.
The question now becomes: how do people make more money? If someone has a 9 to 5 job, their salary is mostly fixed. In that case, they will need to expand to multiple income streams with a Passive Income Ecosystem. With a Passive Income Ecosystem, one can expand to multiple income streams using their Monetizable Identity and Investor Personality. Income is no longer limited by just a nine-to-five job anymore.
On top of teaching the practical steps to creating more income streams, Cherry also focuses on the Psychology of money so her clients get to build wealth from a holistic perspective. “Personal finance is so much more than just number crunching. It is also about the psychology of money, which includes your cultural upbringing, generational trauma, money mindset, and all the lies that you’ve been told about money,” says Tung. “So many gurus in the personal finance space shame people for not saving and investing enough. I was there too, feeling like there was something uniquely wrong about myself because I was not hitting my savings goals… What I didn’t realize back then was the correlation between my mental health, my trauma and my money habits. That was when everything clicked for me, and I started making massive progress towards early retirement.” With a holistic view of personal finance, freedom seekers are able to build their way in a much more sustainable way, and experience more peace and joy in life. Pursuing FI/RE is no longer about endless sacrifices and delayed gratification for the potential of happiness in the future, it is also about the joy, happiness and abundance right now.
