Oscar’s Palm Springs capped off Black History Month by recognizing some top figures in the African American community at an awards ceremony held at the restaurant. According to organizer Steven Williams, a celebrity photographer and Palm Springs resident, the honorees consisted of a group of individuals and organizations that have made heroic contributions and shown leadership in Black America and the African diaspora.

Among the recipients was: Byron Scott, a 3-time NBA Champion with the Lakers, NBA Head Coach of the Year, Sports Analyst, businessman and author; Lisa Boykin a prominent business & legal affairs attorney in the entertainment field; Dr. Stephan Scoggins, a proud Veteran in the US Army, an educator teaching nursing in the Coachella Valley, former Oklahoma City Police Officer and currently a real estate broker and owner of Esteem TeamProperties; and Janice McZeal, a Palm Springs resident who received the Community Philanthropic Award for her work with the homeless.

The Oscar-winning director John Singleton was also posthumously honored and his mother, Sheila Ward, was on hand to pick up the award. The American film director, screenwriter, producer and actor was best known for writing and directing “Boyz n the Hood” in 1991. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director for that film, becoming, at age 24, the youngest ever nominated.

Black History Month is an annual observance that’s also known as African-American History Month. It has received official recognition beyond the U.S. and among such nations as the United Kingdom and Canada.

“Palm Springs does very little for African Americans and it was a dream of mine to honor some of the heroes of the community during Black History Month,” said Dan Gore, owner of Oscar’s Palm Springs. “Steven Williams went about making it happen and we are so delighted by the overwhelming response it had on our local community.”
