Recently, the first engineering prototype of China’s first natively developed purpose-built Robotaxi, jointly built by CaoCao Mobility and Geely Auto together with other partners, officially rolled off the production line, marking the project’s entry into the real-vehicle verification stage of mass-production solutions. This progress means the model has further transitioned from product definition and engineering development to real-vehicle verification, also providing a new entry point for observing the technology R&D and industrialization process behind China’s robotaxi investment.
This engineering prototype features holistic vehicle design centered on driverless operational needs of Robotaxi. Rather than simply adjusting traditional vehicle configurations, it involves systematic considerations across vehicle architecture, cabin experience, operational fulfillment, safety assurance, and full lifecycle operation. According to the plan, the CaoCao Mobility customized version will enter mass production in 2027, and related products will continue to advance development oriented toward actual mobility service demands.
During the project advancement, Geely Auto leverages its advantages in vehicle R&D and manufacturing systems, while CaoCao Mobility integrates its mobility operation experience into product definition and operational systems. The two parties conduct collaborative development focusing on how vehicles can adapt to real operational processes, attempting to form tighter connections between product design and subsequent fleet management and service fulfillment. For China’s robotaxi investment, engineering verification is a crucial link connecting technical solutions with subsequent mass production, and the degree of alignment between vehicle R&D capability and operational scenario adaptation also warrants continuous attention.
CaoCao Mobility CEO Gong Xin stated that the roll-off of the engineering prototype is an important step toward the engineering realization of the trinity closed-loop ecosystem of “intelligent purpose-built vehicles + intelligent driving technology + intelligent operations“. The company will continue to advance the development of Robotaxi models oriented toward operational needs together with partners such as Geely Auto, enhancing product adaptability to actual mobility scenarios.
In terms of product planning, Eva Cab adopts a no-front-passenger-seat, steering-wheel-free design and is natively developed for autonomous driving operational scenarios. CaoCao Mobility will commence mass production in 2027 and plans to deploy 100,000 Robotaxis by 2030. As the project enters the real-vehicle verification stage, subsequent mass production progress, vehicle reliability verification, and operational system support will become important aspects for observing the advancement of this plan. Currently, CaoCao Mobility has deployed over 200 second-generation Robotaxis.
Beyond vehicle R&D, CaoCao Mobility is also improving Robotaxi operational support. The Green Intelligent Mobility Hub integrates functions such as automated energy replenishment, vehicle cleaning, preparation, and intelligent dispatching to provide support for fleet operations. The company’s 2026 interim results report shows that as of June 30, 2026, CaoCao Mobility’s service network had covered 215 cities across China; total revenue for the first half reached RMB10.3 billion, up 9.0% year on year, and mobility service revenue reached RMB9.8 billion, up 13.9% year on year. These existing platform operational capabilities provide a business foundation for the continuous exploration of intelligent mobility services.
In overseas markets, CaoCao Mobility cooperated with the Abu Dhabi Investment Office in 2026 and advanced cooperation with K2 Group and May Mobility to explore Robotaxi deployment and operations in overseas markets. As the engineering prototype enters real-vehicle verification, CaoCao Mobility is advancing related layout from links including model R&D, operational adaptation, and market expansion. The industrialization process concerned by China’s robotaxi investment also needs to be continuously observed in conjunction with subsequent product verification, mass production planning, and actual operational performance.
