Using Automotive Industry's Lean Manufacturing Principals to Run a Hair Salon

Dana White, Paralee Boyd Salon owner studied the automotive industry's lean manufacturing principles to help identify and develop processes focused on improving the customer experience in an efficient manner, without sacrificing overall quality.

DETROIT, MI, January 28, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dana White is an innovator in the hair care industry. She is the owner of Paralee Boyd Salon in Midtown Detroit, MI. She has mastered and applied the principles of lean manufacturing to what she calls the Paralee Boyd process. "The way we wash your hair to the design of the location is all 'leaned out,' meaning it eliminates waste," she explains. These methods also enable Paralee Boyd to operate as a walk-in-only salon. White has recently launched her national brand of products and after a short shutdown due to the pandemic of 2020 is back open in her Detroit Midtown location.

The product line includes:
Anti-Itch Growth Oil: This hair oil provides relief from itchy dry scalp while aiding in hair growth. Can be used daily or as needed. For best results use 3 times a week. Vegan-friendly.

Edge Control: Provides a long-lasting maximum hold. Smoothing the hair line and delivering a polished look while adding moisture and shine. Works well on coarse hair. Vegan-friendly.

Hemp Hair Growth Leave in Solution + Anagain is an excellent solution that promotes hair growth targeting the dermal papilla cells that are key to the hair growth cycle.

Paralee Boyd provides shampoo and hair health and maintenance. Stylists will trim hair, put hot oil, deep conditioner, relaxer, protein mask, and charcoal clay mask on when needed. They use an upgraded blow-dryer and flat irons; the Paralee way. Paralee Boyd stylists don't use pressing combs at all, but do a lot of treatments with protein, steam, deep, hair health thickening and blow dry the Paralee way.

This past year Paralee Boyd earned the top prize in the 2020 of the Rocket Mortgage Detroit Demo Day. Dana White earned the $200,000 top prize. Rocket Mortgage Detroit Demo Day is an annual pitch competition that invests over $1 million into Detroit-based, early-stage companies with an ambition to scale. Our goal is to showcase, inspire, and invest in the Detroit entrepreneurial community. Demo Day is one part of a larger strategy of the Rocket Community Fund to elevate Detroit as a destination for small businesses and high growth startups by deploying capital and supportive resources. The Rocket Community Fund is the philanthropic arm of the Rock Family of Companies.

The Paralee Boyd concept, as White calls it, are the lessons learned from her grandmother to find one's life's purpose; to not let anything stop you in achieving that purpose; to treat people as you want to be treated. These values, coupled with White's extensive background in lean manufacturing learned from the auto industry, has created a sure-win formula for White: the Paralee Boyd concept.

White grew up knowing women sat in a salon for hours, you had or were told you had problem hair and she decided she was going to be about solving those problems. She felt she had time to spend in a salon all day and pay too much for that! "My lifestyle no longer fit that model," the working lady said. "I needed to be able to walk in and get my hair done." When living in other cities Dana saw this model and knew she could do it.

Dana White, and Paralee Boyd focus became the thick and curly hair. Because there are other salons that are called blow-dry bars, they're not necessarily geared toward women with thick and curly hair. Most salons upcharge. Most salons lengthen your stay because you have thick and curly hair. And for me, once you put the process for them, the process can be applied to anybody. So, I chose thick and curly hair, one because I have thick and curly hair and it is a pain for me, and it was a pain that I saw that wasn't being solved. There are blow dry bars, but again, those really are not geared toward women with thick and curly hair, even with their products.

"Our unique approach is to collect data as people are in our salon to streamline the process, just like manufacturing businesses do." This unique approach allows us to see the metrics to see how long things take and what we have found for curly and thick hair. Our services take 45- 60 minutes.
