Dr. Tameka Ellington is a Professional Development Strategist, Educator and Personal Growth Expert and has been working with first generation students for more than a decade. Being first generation herself, she is a passionate advocate for the enrichment of first-generation students and young professionals. Dr. Tameka recently became CEO/Founder of the First-Generation Revolutionaries movement where she provides professional development, spiritual fulfillment, and networking opportunities for people who are first generation. She works with universities and organizations to provide critical skills students and young professionals need. Be the GOAT: A Career Readiness Manual for First Generation Students and Young Professionals is the second book published by Dr. Tameka. This comprehensive manual takes readers through the phases of the initial self and career discovery to being the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) and rocking in a new position. This manual will guide its readers through developing their resume and cover letter, tips and tricks for job interviews and salary negotiations, what to do after getting a job, how to communicate with colleagues and workplace behavior. As readers work with this manual, they will begin to revolutionize how they see themselves as young professionals.

Be the GOAT: Career Readiness Manual for First Generation Students and Young Professionals was created to close the social capital and economic gap that first generation individuals face. The highly designed book was created to engage its readers on a participatory revolution of thought. With the book in hand, readers will develop themselves into an up-and-coming professional, ready to take on the world—and to do it with excellence! The book has five chapters:

Chapter 1 – The Assessment and Discovery

Chapter 2 – Get the Interview!

Chapter 3 – YAY! You Got the JOB! Now What?

Chapter 4 – Professional Etiquette & Workplace Behavior

Chapter 5 – Communicate like the G.O.A.T!

Some of the topics discussed in the book include career assessment, preparing for future employer relations and negotiations, financial budgeting, networking, and even public speaking, just to name a few.

“No matter what your field or industry, there are some key elements that stretch from the arts into the sciences, and then back into the journalism world. Possessing these key elements is what makes attaining success easier for some than for others. These key elements help you stand out among your peers, and really bring to the forefront your GOAT characteristics. Coming from a household where I was the first person to earn a college degree, no one that I knew had ever worked in a corporate environment. So, there was really no one that I could ask at home. I went into the corporate industry blind and naïve about workplace behavior and social etiquette; but like Kevin Hart says, “You gon’ learn today!” says Dr. Tameka.

In partnership with this comprehensive career readiness book, Dr. Tameka is offering a free 3-part course. Once the book is purchased, readers will gain access to a special code connecting them with the Be the GOAT Masterclass. Readers can follow along in the book, as the course is complementary to its contents. Readers will be able to go back to the course, stop it, rewind it, and review it as many times as necessary. Part 1 covers career assessment, finding and interviewing for a position, Part 2 covers the importance of follow up, negotiating for the position, and transitioning into your new career, and Part 3 covers communication and relationships in professional spaces. Readers will have the option to buy the book with a free course or to level up their professional presentation and skills, they can purchase the package including the book, the free course, and a 1-hour coaching session with Dr. Tameka.

First generation students continue to be disproportionally disadvantaged in completing their degree and finding a career after graduation. Forty-one percent of African American college students are first generation (Postsecondary National Policy Institute) and more than 50% of first-generation students are from a low-income family. As news and media headlines have stated, poor Blacks were most adversely affected by the pandemic. Unemployment rates are 14.2% for Whites during Covid and 16.7% for Blacks (Educational Policy Institute). According to MSNBC, Whites recover faster from a recession than Blacks; therefore, it is critical that universities put extra measures in place to support their Black first-generation students in obtaining employment after graduation. Black first-generation students are less likely to get hired than their peers, and once employed, they earn 17% less than non-first-generation young professionals (EAB). Dr. Tameka’s upcoming release, Be the GOAT: A Career Readiness Manual for First Generation Students and Young Professionals will teach its readers how to gain more social capital in order to close the economic gap that so many first generation people face.
