What to do when your loved one is arrested and incarcerated

Prison: The Hidden Sentence book launch by author Julia Lazareck

LAS VEGAS - Aug. 19, 2020 - PRLog -- When someone is sent to prison, often it's family members forced to pay a big price and live a hidden sentence for a crime they didn't commit.

They're left hiding in shame wondering what to do next, while trying to navigate the complicated prison system that has different rules in every state.

"The most painful moment in my life was sitting next to my parents on that cold wooden bench in the courtroom. Looking into my little brother's eyes, you could feel his fear," said author Julia Lazareck.

"I'll never forget those words that rang through my ears. Guilty. When the judge sent my brother to life in prison, he also rendered a life sentence to my family."

Her brother was incarcerated for 15 years. During that time she felt fear, anger, and sadness. Whenever something reminded her of him, she would get sad and sometimes go into the bathroom and cry. She was left with emotional trauma but didn't tell anyone.

"It's the hidden sentence. The sentence we all serve when a loved one is incarcerated."

While her brother was in prison, she didn't know a lot about the prison system and how to cope emotionally. She made mistakes and learned too late how to adapt.

To help struggling families cope in the same situation, she wrote Prison: The Hidden Sentence.

In the book, she takes you through the judicial process from trial, sentencing and beyond. You'll learn important lessons she discovered.

The book is a resource about the prison system, with stories from the author and other people. It provides everything you need to know from arrest and incarceration to reentry.

"If you haven't been through it, you're unprepared what to do. After sentencing, you don't know where your loved one could end up. It could states away."

She covers topics like how to visit your loved one in prison? What are the rules and what you're allowed to wear while visiting? How to keep in touch when you're not visiting?

Lazareck is an advocate for change to help families whose loved ones have been imprisoned and is the Founder of Prison the Hidden Sentence™.

Through her blog, podcast, publications, and speaker events, she helps families understand the journey their loved ones will make while in the prison system.
