Mark Farrah Associates Assessed Trends in Employer Group Medicare Advantage Membership

In the latest analysis brief, Mark Farrah Associates (MFA) provided insights about the current employer-group Medicare Advantage (MA) market and assessed membership trends by carrier and state. As of October 1, 2019, roughly 321,000 more beneficiaries were enrolled in employer-group MA plans than in December of 2018, a 7.7% increase according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Medicare Advantage enrollment reports aggregated by Mark Farrah Associates in Medicare Business Online™.

• Total Medicare Advantage (MA) membership is currently over 23 million, representing approximately 35% of the 67.1 million Americans eligible for Medicare.

• As of October 1, 2019, MFA reported approximately 4.5 million members were enrolled in employer-group Medicare Advantage plans, or Medicare Advantage employer-group waiver plans (MA-EGWPs).

• The top five carriers covered nearly 84% of all group Medicare Advantage enrollees as of October 1, 2019. UnitedHealth maintained its leading position as the top group Medicare Advantage organization in the country, with nearly 1.4 million enrolled.

• California maintained the highest number of employer group MA members with over 622,000 at October 1, 2019.
