NTS Built World’s Largest High-Force Vibration Facility to Support the Apollo 11 Mission

National Technical Systems, Inc. (“NTS”), the leader in qualification testing, inspection, and certification solutions in North America, is proud to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. As pioneers in space testing, NTS was awarded a major contract to perform vibration and acoustic testing on Saturn V—the launch vehicle for the Apollo 11 mission.

“It is the highest honor to lead a company that played a role in humankind’s most significant achievement,” said Rich Adams, CEO at NTS. “The Apollo 11 mission shaped the identity of a nation—and our contributions to the Saturn V rocket—shaped the identity of NTS.”

To simulate the appropriate conditions for launch, NTS built the world’s largest high-force vibration facility. The facility included a 100,000-cubic-foot reverberation room for acoustics along with two massive vibration pits for simulating 400,000 force-pounds—and operating over the frequency range of 0 Hz to 1000 Hz sine or 10 Hz to 2000 Hz random.

In addition, NTS engineers designed, installed, and operated an online, high-frequency, digital data acquisition system with 450 channels. As part of this process, NTS prepared computer programs for the automatic printout of auto-correlation, cross-correlation, power spectral density, and amplitude-versus-frequency graphs.

The successful completion of the NTS test program represented a major milestone in the qualification of the Saturn V rocket for flight. With the Saturn V vehicle delivering the Apollo 11 crew safely to the moon, NTS is proud to celebrate the role it played in the world’s most famous mission. “We’re proud to celebrate our past,” said Adams. “Now we’re focused on building the future with efforts directed at returning Americans to the moon—and beyond.”
