The International Support Fibromyalgia Network (Support Fibro) is recruiting patients and their caregivers in preparation for Fibromyalgia Advocacy Day in Washington, D.C. on September 19. After all, those living with this chronic condition must fight through the pain and other effects it causes each and every day.
Fibromyalgia is characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues. Researchers believe that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way the brain processes pain signals. It affects as many as four million Americans ages 18 and older.
“Fibromyalgia is an unforgiving condition. It never lets up, and it can wear down even the toughest of us. But together we are stronger and have the power to affect change,” said Melissa Talwar, Executive Director, Support Fibro. “The Advocacy Day gives us the opportunity to come together to both support each other and lobby our legislators.”
Support Fibro is a patient-centered non-profit with a mission to educate and inspire those living with fibromyalgia and their loved ones. It was founded by a diverse group of individuals with one thing in common: they all suffer from the disorder. Its first annual Advocacy Day will be held September 19 and brings together fibromyalgia advocates, clinicians, caregivers and loved ones on Capitol Hill to connect with each other and speak to their legislative representatives about supporting critical education programs, accessibility to alternative pain care, and encourage more fibromyalgia-specific research to accelerate the search for new treatments and improve the lives of patients.
Registration is now underway for those who want to participate in Fibromyalgia Advocacy Day at fibrodc.com. The site will be continually updated as the Advocacy Day approaches. Training for all participants will be provided on September 18 and no experience is required.
