Shippers Turning to 3PLs for Help in Satisfying Speedy Deliveries: Augusto Beato

A robust economy is boosting demands on third-party logistics service providers in the race for speedy delivery, according to Portland SEO's CEO, Augusto Beato.

He was reacting to a survey that showed third-party logistics (3PLs) providers topping the list of CBRE’s list of biggest warehouse leases in the first half of 2018.

Beato attributed the trend to create the most flexible and nimble distribution networks possible, which the 3PLs could provide.

"Shippers need to keep up with growing demand, and they are turning to 3PLs for delivery speed and efficiency," Beato pointed out.

Consequently, 3PLs are investing heavily in infrastructure and technology to fill this gap and generate value within the supply chain, said Ward Richmond, a Dallas-based executive vice president at real estate services firm Colliers International.

“This was the first time 3PLs were at the top of the list, a proof-in-point that people are outsourcing as much as possible,” says Adam Mullen, CBRE America's leader of industrial and logistics.

Mary Holcomb of the University of Tennessee and Karl Manrodt of Georgia College said it’s no longer good enough for firms to improve the efficiency within their enterprises to meet requirements for faster and less costly delivery of goods.

The two made the statement in describing the responses in another survey from 240 shippers and logistics firms in 15 industry sectors.

“Companies across all industries are struggling to find the capacity they need while managing escalating costs,” Holcomb and Mandrodt added.

The University of Tennessee and Georgia College are the long-running sponsors of the studies released at the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals annual conference in Nashville, Tenn.

“Working individually will not get the efficiencies needed and expected in this speed-fueled economy,” study authors concluded. “The big question is whether or not we are willing to work together and really compete supply chain to supply chain.”
