Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Pre-Employment Screening Program Wins Two More Awards in September

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) Pre-Employment Screening Program (PSP) website earned two awards this month: a Government Standard of Excellence award in the Web Marketing Association’s 2018 WebAwards competition, and a Continuous Improvement of Public Services award in the Granicus Digital Strategy Award competition. The awards follow recent wins in three Interactive Media Award categories.

PSP provides immediate online access to commercial drivers’ safety histories, with the drivers’ written authorization, to assist motor carriers with the hiring process. FMCSA contracts with NIC Federal, LLC to develop and maintain PSP. FMCSA is responsible for the PSP data and general oversight, while NIC Federal handles daily operations, customer service, and technology development and maintenance.

The WebAwards “recognize the standard of excellence for which all websites should strive.” PSP received above average scores from industry experts in seven criteria covering Design, Innovation, Content, Technology, Interactivity, Copywriting, and Ease of Use.

One judge commented, “This is a very straightforward website that gets its purpose across in a visually appealing way. The site allows the user multiple ways to interact in order to get answers.”

The Granicus Digital Strategy Award winners “implemented digital strategies that demonstrated effective and innovative ways to streamline processes, transform access to services, and improve the citizen experience.” The Continuous Improvement of Public Services category honors organizations that “made significant service improvements to enhance the citizen experience with reduced wait times or new records management to improve internal processes.”

Both awards recognized PSP’s recent system enhancements, including a streamlined enrollment wizard, providing new users with a simplified method to register for a PSP account in a few short steps. Enrollments have skyrocketed since the wizard’s launch, with most enrollment applications now submitted online.

“We are thrilled that the PSP website was honored by two more award competitions this month,” said Laura Johnson, NIC Federal General Manager. “These awards highlight our efforts to successfully communicate with the motor carrier industry and the public through an effective platform. We are constantly working to implement modern features and present them in a straightforward manner that fulfills our visitors’ needs and encourages participation by the motor carrier industry.”

According to a study released by FMCSA, PSP positively impacts the safety of America's roadways. The study shows that motor carriers using PSP have, on average, decreased crash rates by 8 percent, and driver out-of-service (OOS) rates by 17 percent. It is estimated that in the 12 months studied, the motor carrier group using PSP prevented 863 crashes and more than 3,500 driver OOS incidents.
