BREAKING: Capitol Riverfront Contender in Short-List to Bring Amazon HQ2 to Washington DC

Amazon could be part of one of the largest riverfront redevelopment projects in the U.S. located in the heart of the nation’s capital. The electronic commerce and cloud-computing giant, Amazon, has narrowed down proposals from 238 communities to a short-list of twenty cities still in consideration, one of the four D.C. neighborhoods being Capitol Riverfront. The development sites put forth in this partnership will create a riverfront campus for Amazon on both sides of the river. There are few places in the city and even country that offer the possibility of a waterfront campus that engages a river like this.

Capitol Riverfront is the fastest growing neighborhood in DC and one of the only riverfront locations being considered. Amazon has an opportunity to grow at the convergence of two great rivers—on historic land poised for growth and already developing in ways that are balanced yet leave room for more.

“We’re thrilled that Washington DC is in the shortlist of cities, and of course we think we are in the best neighborhood in the city for a second Amazon campus,” stated Michael Stevens, president of the Capitol Riverfront BID. “Being a unique mixed-use urban riverfront neighborhood is one of our prized differentiators, adding some magic to our approach. We think Amazon would appreciate the vibrant vision, sophisticated planning, and sound public investment that the DC government has made in the neighborhood, accelerating Capitol Riverfront’s growth.”

In a new report, Riverfront Recaptured, released today at the Capitol Riverfront Business Improvement District’s 10th Anniversary Annual Meeting, it was revealed that in 2018, Capitol Riverfront will generate $287 million in gross revenues to the District, more than 3.5 times what it generated before the BID was created in 2007. The data proved that the public’s investment is already leveraging enhanced tax revenues beyond the original investment.

"When asked what's the best city for one of the fastest-growing companies, we answered: #ObviouslyDC," Mayor Muriel Bowser said. "Making this list reaffirms what we already knew going into the bid process – Washington, DC is no longer a one-company government town, we are a leader in innovation and tech, brimming with top talent and endless opportunity."

“In this deep-dive exercise when responding to Amazon’s RFP, not only did we identify an opportunity for 8M unique SF for Amazon, we also identified an additional 8M SF for growth opportunities like Amazon’s organizational expansion, new housing, retail, hotels, commercial uses,” stated Michael Stevens, Capitol Riverfront BID president.
