The End of Charity Facebook Fundraising in Europe

Meta's fundraising tools will soon be discontinued on Facebook and Instagram in many European countries, according to Facebook Payments International Limited. Starting July 1, 2024, charitable organizations in the European Economic Area will no longer have access to these tools for collecting donations.

These platforms supported various fundraising activities, allowing users to initiate fundraisers for their favorite organizations. They also enabled nonprofits to add donation buttons to their profiles. These features will soon be unavailable with the forthcoming change, prompting nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) to seek alternative online fundraising platforms.

One critical factor for NGOs to consider in selecting a new platform is the absence of commission fees, a feature previously offered by Meta's tools. Krzysztof Ilnicki, (chief technology officer) CTO and vice president of 4fund.com, notes, "We follow the crowdfunding business worldwide and have always been astonished by the high commissions charged by most platforms, ranging from 5% to 15%."

The shift from Meta's tools affects NGOs, volunteers, and supporters. These tools provided a straightforward method for individuals to engage in fundraising through events or personal occasions, directing funds straight to the chosen NGOs.

In response, platforms like 4fund.com offer unique solutions such as Moneybox, where users can raise funds to support someone's fundraiser collectively, without needing verification and funds goes directly to the campaign's organizer. Soon, a “Fundraisers on Your Behalf” feature will be launched. This feature will enable users to create fundraisers benefiting an NGO's account, even if they don't have any currently ongoing fundraiser.

The transition from Meta's tools allows NGOs to enhance online fundraising by choosing platforms that offer secure transactions, fast withdrawals, and additional features to engage supporters, such as auctions and promotional capabilities.
